Notes |
- Notes from Clark Blackwood
He lived originally in Quebec, as practically all the immigrants to Canada were in those days, and let off on land that was given to them. Of course the whole countryside was just stone.
During the Fenian raids, in which Irishmen from the States tried to take over Canada, Robert Blackwood joined the militia, where he was a major. Their platoon was discharged in Martintown where he got an award of a piece of land.
There were other Blackwoods in Martintown, most of them bachelors, and their gravestones are there.
Robert was farming in Martintown when he received an inheritance from his Uncle Robert in 1887 of an annuity of $500. He left the farm for Allister to run and bought a property in Huntingdon, where he built a home. Several years later (likely 1910) the farm buildings in Martintown were destroyed in a fire (see note below). Robert sold the land and moved everyone to Huntingdon.
- The Big barn on the Blackwood farm, Lot E1/2, 1st Con S.R.R. burned down in the summer of 1902. The present barn was built in its place and it had a very narrow escape from fire in 1906. It created quite a stir owing to the unusual circumstances.
Lightning struck the west end of the barn at about seven o'clock one morning and ran down to the bottom of the hay mow and set the bottom of the mow on fire and soon smoke was rolling up through the hay in the mow. Several farmers were on their way to the cheese factory in Martintown. They saw the smoke and ran their horses to the place and hoisted their milk cans up on the mow and poured the milk on it, then they drew water from the well to pour on it.
One of the Blackwood girls, Agnes, commandeered a horse and wagon and galloped into the village and gave the alarm. There were no telephones in the country then.
The farmers at the factory took their milk and whey and set out for the scene. Others filled their cans with water and followed after.
Men risked their lives standing up on top of the burning hay and poured water, whey, milk , whatever came to hand on it. Marvellous to say they succeeded in putting the fire out and the barn was saved.
Unfortunately two years later (1910) a faulty incubator set the house on fire one evening and it burned down.
